Preston Sands Photography has been a work in progress for many years now. It is the combination of a deep love of Arizona, photography, and the desire to capture natural subjects in a way that perhaps hasn't been seen before.
I took my first photograph when I was 8 years old and it took off from there. In high school and in college, I enrolled in several photography classes, where I tried to learn as much as I could from my instructors. When I was 20, I was given my first good camera, a Pentax SLR. But when I wore it out, I was forced to upgrade. That was when I spoke with a friend of mine who happened to be a professional photographer. Douglas Hamm convinced me to purchase a medium format Hasselblad camera, and took the time to teach me how to use it. The camera was almost 20 years older than me and it was extraordinary. I began working hard at turning photography from my hobby into a skill.
Many people told me that I needed to do something with this skill, but I didn't like the idea of being sent out on an assignment or being told what to photograph, but those were the only options I had until now. I enjoy photographing what I see beauty in. I will drive down many rough dirt roads or hike into wild and remote backcountry to get the image I am looking for.
Most of the images here were shot with a medium format Hasselblad 32mm "Super Wide" camera, or a Hasselblad 500 c/m camera, on color transparency (slide) film. Medium format film contains four times the surface area of 35 mm film, which allows for larger and sharper prints to be produced.
The images you see on this site were shot with God's guidance; without Him this project would not have been possible. These are some of mine and my wife's favorite shots, and the ones that I take the most pride in. I sincerely hope you enjoy viewing my photographs.
